Our Story
The Weatherly Herald
The Weatherly Herald was started in 1880 when a former merchant seaman left Horace Greeley’s New York Tribune and settled in Carbon County, Pennsylvania. In 1885, a teenager named Percy E. Faust answered an ad for a “good, active, intelligent boy to learn the printing trade”, and for decades thereafter the newspaper remained in the Faust family. In 1962, James Faust partnered with Cletus Milan, and the two continued publishing local news and events happening around the small town of Weatherly.
“I guess I’m the editor.” Milan said in a 1973 interview. “We don’t have reporters. People here bring the stuff in and we usually print it.”
Cletus later bought his partner James’ shares of the business and operated it with his wife, Irene. At that point, The Weatherly Herald was the longest running newspaper in the United States printed under its original name. While the rights to the publication were eventually transferred, its legacy lived on as the White Haven based “Journal-Herald”.
Milan Printing
Starting in 1981, using equipment from his former newspaper, Cletus operated a small commercial print shop out of a garage on the East Side of Jim Thorpe that would become known as Milan Printing. Over the years, Milan printed various commissioned works including local sports schedules and the annual program for the Weatherly Hillclimb, a partnership which still endures. In 1995, his son-in-law David Miller took over the business, expanding its floorplan and services to the shop’s present day capabilities.
